Haha…this must be a milestone in history…I actually finished my pure homework. 
Spent lunchtime watching ppl play chinese chess… i couldn’t see any moves… err… ie I’m too crap so I decided to go home to “challenge” my dad (ie get hime to teach me a few tricks, at least so I can see some moves that the pros see.) Um… first one he won in like 15 moves…(haha improvement already cuz last time it was like 5 
) then second time he guided me more… ie guided my so that i would win… haha. I’m so useless at chess… even when my dad tells me what to do “eat my horse la!” I end up eating with the wrong piece. *sigh. Then he goes…”there is one move where you can win already…” and I take like 2 minutes to see it. haha.
I couldn’t help but wonder… why are the majority of guys better than girls? (I can’t think of a good chess player in our year except francine…correct me if I am wrong). How many WAverly Jongs are there in the world? (Um…er…bad example yes but u know what i mean. )Why aren’t we as interested in such games? Women choose ma jong? Iono. is it because of what mrs. hartwright says… “men have better visualisation skills?”
Forgot to mention i spent an hour trying to find my chinese chess set, i looked in all the dusty boxes in the house…sneezed 9000 times…and couldn’t find it. So when mom came home i asked her. “O…isn’t it under the chair?” And there is was, right underneath my nose. *sigh…just messed up my whole room.
Eden assembly tomorrow…haha…its not going to be very interesting…but i have to say sth quite stupid on stage. :-p

Firstly, congrats on your pure hwk and improving chinese chess skills
Here’s what I think:
1) Guys have better spatial visualization/coordination
2) Social upbringing? Chess is after all a violent and aggressive game 😉
3) Girls are less likely to be ‘obsessed’ with the outwardly unrewarding chess – there are plenty of male teachers in KGV to go around right?….hehe kidding.
That’s the reason why girls are less likely to play chess than guys. Obviously, the more you play the better you get, leading to the generalisation that guys are better than girls. However, if a girl is interested and trains for it, there’s nothing preventing her from being as good as the guys. What I’m saying is that girls are already less interested from the outset.
At the highest levels of chess though, the men beat the women – I think that’s where nifty psychological differences come into play. But at our amateur level, practice makes perfect 🙂

I personally think it’s easier then international chess. hmm….I agree with daniel that practice make perfect. Being in N8 in yr 10 and only playing chinese chess every lunch time is really cool….but the downside is the lack of social skill I’ve got due to chess….aiya!!

i feel a guilty and appreciative….while cos i am going on a history trip you have to replace me and go on stage in pitch darkness and make what must be the most ‘amusing’ eden speech in the world. so sorry and thankyou for that.
if you want to improve your chess, i think practicing more and watching more would be helpful. its like maths: practice makes perfect. finding your set was certainly a good step. watching interhouse would be another. guess i could tell you some ‘standard’ moves…
ps. i think there’s this yr. 12 girl called leslie who’s in the school chess team…chinese and possibly looking like waverly jong!
