毛孟靜 vs Kowloon West

It was my first time participating in an election yesterday. Unfornately, a little bit 出師不利, the person I voted for lost out.

Is voting 無聊? Do ignorance of people end up electing people that make the government even worse than if it was left laissez-faire?

I dissagree.

Each candidate has a voice. While I agree that sometimes elections can become somewhat like pop concerts – where popularity preceeds substance of the candidate, governments (or anyone in general) need people to regulate it. And regulation is always good – noone makes the right decisions every time. How often have you thought up a solotion to a problem and believe it is the best solution out there, only to have someone come up and say “hey… have you ever thought about doing it this way?” and you think it makes the most sense in the world? Or even if you don’t think it makes the most sense, you might find out that you are the only person who thinks your idea is so brilliant. People are always biased, and that is why we need a legco with different voices. Only this way can we have improvement, even if it frustrates you so when things don’t go your way.

Do I vote by celebritism? Can I say I am truly not affected by 明星效應? No, I agree I do somewhat, but I also like to think that I vote for a certain candidate because I agree with some of his/her directions and thoughts. Of course a little charisma helps too, not only to attract me, but charismatic people in general get things done. I really think has this charisma. 毛孟靜 would have been a very nice voice to have too, but of course there are other voices in the society too and I think that we did the best that we could to reflect the voices in our district.

I would like to dedicate more time to understand more about politics. Politics and finance are areas where I am interested in expanding my knowledge in, but sometimes a little bit 身不由己 by all the other distractions. The younger generation in Hong Kong are in general shallow, with no desire to become more involved in issues like the government and the people around you. It becomes even harder when you are from the middle class, where it seems that none of the issues that are targeted in the elections are really for you, nor do you really need any “help”.  But I really do believe that as a responsible abiding citizen of any country, one should exercise their sacred vote.

Thoughts

There is so much I want to do, but I don’t know if I have the persistence to accomplish. I feel that my life is not yet going where I want it to go; and I must do something to change it, but often these things are the result of a long period of persistence – and I have been know to tangent off in pursuit of more short term stimulations and rewards. I hope I can finally conquer this ADD-esk lack of focus and really accomplish a goal that I set myself to.

Goal number 1: Train for a sub – 1 hr 10K race! Enter the Standard Charter 10K next year! Back when I was young I was pretty good at distance running. Never had the burst, but I had some kind of innate endurance. I hope that by rediscovering my physical endurance, I can also help bring out my mental endurance. Back in Year 8 I remember my 5K time was around 20-25 mins… obviously I wasn’t as fat and had less weight to carry, but back then I didn’t train whatsoever either… so in 10 months I hope I can really get back to this standard!

Today I walk/ran 7K in 60 mins… eek… on a treadmill too… v diff from the road >< long way go!

Anyone wanna gym with me? =P

Those who know my lifestyle in the US, will know that I watch CNN religiously. CNN from early days I regarded as the most professional TV news channel in the world (though now I think this spot belongs to BBC, because CNN is too focused on AMERICA, they didn’t even report on the China Snowstorm for christsake.)

Another reason why I watch CNN: I adore the anchors! Especially Anderson Cooper: I read his book and really admired his bravery and strength and resilience as a journalist. Even as a son of an heiress his path to success did not get handed to him, and his passion for journalism is something to the admired! Of course I love how he gushes when people make fun of how “delicious” he is… (haha watch Live with Regis and Kelly)…and when him and Erica Hill have those “make fun of each other sessions.

but I do think he’s gay. Hmm.

His book: A recommended read!

But the recent comments that another anchor, Jack Cafferty made, are not to be respected (I had never really liked Jack Cafferty, they should boot him from CNN!) Here’s a quote:

Cafferty responded in reference to the Chinese Government and the Americans Government’s political and business relationship: “Well, I don’t know if China is any different, but our relationship with China is certainly different. We’re in hock to the Chinese up to our eyeballs because of the war in Iraq, for one thing. They’re holding hundreds of billions of dollars worth of our paper. We also are running hundred of billions of dollars worth of trade deficits with them, as we continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export, you know, jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we’re buying from Wal-Mart. So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed. I think they’re basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they’ve been for the last 50 years”.

Obviously such a comment would lead to major outrage among Chinese people. Goons? Thugs? I think you are a goon and a thug. You’re the scum of an anchor that is bringing disgrace to your TV channel and the other GOOD anchors that take pride on being part of CNN. That was an incredibly racist remark. He responded by saying he meant the Chinese government not the chinese people or chinese americans. Ya right, he was talking about exports, and chinese labour, and chinese businesses, not the government. Do you think America would be where it is right now without Chinese trade? Go home you self indulgent American Prick!

>< Sorry about the rude language, but I really do dissaprove of his incredibly racist message. The Chinese do have problems, I don’t entirely approve of the way the Chinese deal with Tibet, and democratic leaders in China. But the Chinese are not as biased as the western media portrays them to be either. News is supposed to be about the truth, not about entertainment value and to evolve strong (but wrongly evoked) feelings! CNN’s motto has always been to deliver the truth, to allow you to SEE for yourself, and even in Hong Kong I watch its podcasts daily. I just hope they can do as they say, give people the truth, unbiased truth!

See: http://www.anti-cnn.com/ for more examples of western media bias.

Sammi

So happy to see Sammi regularly back in the public. Gives me something to look forward to on TV! (Ahh Esther hurry up and go back to your sitcom the episodes are mostly very mo liu without you!) Very refreshing to see Sammi host the Hong Kong Film Awards, and to see her on TVB such as on the IFBI sales award ceremony and the Oxfam shows that documents her trip to Laos to visit underprivilaged children. I look forward to a new album and hopefully some more concerts, Sammi will be an everlasting artist! =D

(Tho I hope she does find happiness some day!)
