Sanlu Baby Milk Formula

“New Zealand’s Fonterra Farmer’s Cooperative, a joint venture partner holding 43 percent stock in Sanlu Group, found out about the contamination and reported to the group’s board August 2—six days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony—and requested more than once that Sanlu immediately recall the contaminated formula, but were denied by local Chinese authorities.”

~ While we were all marveling at the superb display of China at the Beijing 2008 games, China’s next generation were sacrifised. The buzz word around the world these days appears to be “change” – Obama loves it, now McCain follows – but some things never change… The Chinese high authoraties still have complete disregard for human/peasant life. To save face, to not marr the spectacular Olympic ceremony where China can be integrated with the rest of the developed world and showcase its extraordinary sportsmanship and ability to put up a show, it is worth the health and lives of the next generation.

Sanlu is mostly a peasant brand – known for its cheaper price and appealing to those lower income households, but yet commands a groping 18% market share. The story is that some milk farmers were unable to produce milk to the proteins standards set by the company, and to cut their losses, mixed Melamine into the fresh milk, an industrial chemical that can increase protein content but pose serious health risks to the kidneys and beyond. Perhaps it isnt such a prestigous brand, hey, noone important is drinking it, just some peasant children who likely won’t become anyone important anyway. Hey, they probably won’t die, just some complications that may haunt them for the rest of their lives.

I wonder if China will ever learn that sometimes owning up to your mistakes and limiting the everlasting harm is more effective way to “save face.”

Work

Work life is fun. But it can get a little boring sometimes. I don’t feel that I have much responsibility yet – perhaps due to the numerous times that I have made mistakes. I hope that each mistake is made just once and I don’t make them again. My boss is so nice… I make not 1, but 4 mistakes in the same document… and he writes “Thank you for taking a lead on XXX document. Please just do a double check of the following numbers in the composite sheet”. Hmm… isn’t that such a nice way of putting “Hey, you suck, stop falling asleep and check ur damn numbers before sending them to me!”?

Gotta get into the habit of checking things like 5 times before i send.

It kinda sucks sitting alone by myself outside. On the one hand I can surf the net when i’m bored and such… but i feel left out on the gossip, haha and you know how girls live on gossip. It also makes it easy for people to forget about you… for lunch and stuff.. Today for lunch I tried to make my way to the lunch place where we were celebrating a colleague’s birthday, but being hopeless at HK Island geography, I walked around the block twice without seeing the restaurant >< and my colleague went back to the office to find me feeling bad that they had forgotten about me.

So much for being an orienteering champion, can’t even read a map.

Mmmm… don’t u just wanna eat this Moon (cake?)

Fat juicy butt cheeks… Mmmm… delicacy!

毛孟靜 vs Kowloon West

It was my first time participating in an election yesterday. Unfornately, a little bit 出師不利, the person I voted for lost out.

Is voting 無聊? Do ignorance of people end up electing people that make the government even worse than if it was left laissez-faire?

I dissagree.

Each candidate has a voice. While I agree that sometimes elections can become somewhat like pop concerts – where popularity preceeds substance of the candidate, governments (or anyone in general) need people to regulate it. And regulation is always good – noone makes the right decisions every time. How often have you thought up a solotion to a problem and believe it is the best solution out there, only to have someone come up and say “hey… have you ever thought about doing it this way?” and you think it makes the most sense in the world? Or even if you don’t think it makes the most sense, you might find out that you are the only person who thinks your idea is so brilliant. People are always biased, and that is why we need a legco with different voices. Only this way can we have improvement, even if it frustrates you so when things don’t go your way.

Do I vote by celebritism? Can I say I am truly not affected by 明星效應? No, I agree I do somewhat, but I also like to think that I vote for a certain candidate because I agree with some of his/her directions and thoughts. Of course a little charisma helps too, not only to attract me, but charismatic people in general get things done. 余若薇 I really think has this charisma. 毛孟靜 would have been a very nice voice to have too, but of course there are other voices in the society too and I think that we did the best that we could to reflect the voices in our district.

I would like to dedicate more time to understand more about politics. Politics and finance are areas where I am interested in expanding my knowledge in, but sometimes a little bit 身不由己 by all the other distractions. The younger generation in Hong Kong are in general shallow, with no desire to become more involved in issues like the government and the people around you. It becomes even harder when you are from the middle class, where it seems that none of the issues that are targeted in the elections are really for you, nor do you really need any “help”.  But I really do believe that as a responsible abiding citizen of any country, one should exercise their sacred vote.
